The Warriors

Ah... finally. When some cult classics make it to DVD, making it easier for schmucks like me to check out what they've been missing out on, I can’t help but feel I’m finally catching up with the rest of the human race. One such classic is late 70s low-budget gang/action film 'The Warriors'.
I was familiar with the film and it's plot a long time ago - such was it's reputation. I expected a fairly low-key, low-budget genre flick; something high on the cheese factor. For the most part my expectations were met, if not exceeded, and I was all the more happier for it. 'The Warriors' concerns a gang of the same name, framed for the murder of big-time ganglord Cyrus, and desperately trying to get home alive amongst the pandemonium that results from his death. It's an action/adventure film, with the 'innocent' gang coming up against all sorts of obstacles (mostly rival gangs and cops).
It's a film firmly entrenched in it's era, and that's what makes it all the more fun. It makes it's setting a netherworld counterpart to New York; a New York overrun by various identifiable gangs; an almost futuristic setting in it's underworld power-structures. I wish I'd seen this film 10 years ago, I would've loved it so much back then. The various gangs are a hoot, each one with a different uniform and angle.
This film is a classic in it's own right, the action pumps along continuously and impressively. The acting isn't the best, nor is the dialogue, but it's so cheesy that you can't help but cheer it all along anyway.
HIGHLIGHTS: The fight in the train station toilets would have to be my favourite part.
TRIVIA: It's rumoured that Mr T. played one of the Warriors, sans-mohawk and pre-muscly build. Also, now defunct Sydney band 'The Bedlam Beggars' released a song 'Who Shot Cyrus', gloriously based on the film and featuring all the best lines of dialogue as parts of the lyrics.

Film & TV on DVD
Walter Hill (DeadWood, The Driver, Extreme Predjudice, 48Hrs) is one of the great action directors.
That new Directors Cut DVd is The Warriors as even Id never seen it. The whole comic book insert thing works a treat and there are little micro seconds here and there of extra nastiness.
