Miller's Crossing

Miller's Crossing
Miller's Crossing (1990)

As a fan of gangster flicks (the mob kind, not the rapper sort) and the Coen brothers (‘Fargo’, ‘The Big Lebowski’, etc) I was glad to happen upon this weekly video a few days ago. The cover made it look kind of cheesy, but I was glad to find the film was nothing of the sort.

‘Miller’s Crossing’ is a sharp, tight tale of Irish and Italian gangsters in the late 1920s. The film starts off in the thick of the story, filling in the details as it goes, and doesn’t let up on it’s double-crosses, back-stabs and back-mouthing until the very end. The characters are more than your stock-standard mafia-types and the direction is amazing.

I found myself trying to second-guess what was next to happen in the film a lot of time, and motivations I took for granted were even pulled out from under me in some places. I like this. The fact that the film doesn’t even bother to point out it’s own cleverness a lot of the time shows a respect for the audience that most Hollywood movies are afraid to embrace.

HIGHLIGHTS: The old-fashioned technique of the camera panning away as characters make love, only to pan back to a dead body elsewhere is brilliant, as is the glorious gunfight that follows.

The story of a man who just wants his hat back.

Damn, I just finished writring a review for this for later in the week. Not only my favourite Coen brothers films but one of the greatest scripts of all time IMO.

Gabriel Byrne is sublime and the Tommy gun scene set to Danny Boy always knocks me out.

"If I knew we were going to cast our feelings into words I would have memerized the song of psalm." Gabriel Byrne
