Ghostbusters

It may not be that old (1984), but Ghostbusters is an eternal classic for me, a little boy that wanted to bust ghosts really, really bad.
The premise is brilliant - three dubious scientists get shucked from the world of academia and decide to take their research to the streets of Manhattan, making a buck off of paranormal activity.
It's a decidedly NYC-style plot, with a zany scheme, wild colours and making money. Bill Murray, Harold Ramis and Dan Akroyd play the three main Ghostbusters, running around town, zapping spirits with these awesome proton packs, capturing them in traps, then storing them in a containment unit.
I realize it seems nonsensical, even, perhaps, worthy of derision... but I beg you to reconsider. It's a classic for nostalgia, probably not holding up well today, but there's such vivacity and drive behind it that it inspired a sequel, several games and a few seasons of an animated show.
If you really want to understand the mind of a 30-year-old man from an English speaking country, you'll have to come to terms with certain things. Cartoons from the 80s: GI Joe, Transformers, Voltron, Visionaries. Women from the 80s: Farrah Fawcett, Phoebe Cates, Suzanne Somers.
And movies from the 80s... one of which is Ghostbusters, entangling our precious minds with tentacles of ectoplasm, sliding us into nightmares that broke into heroic victories.
You see, we were afraid, like all kids. Afraid of ghosts and monsters... other generation had to grow out of it, but the Ghostbusters gave us the inspiration to finally fight back.
Surrounded by ghosts and evil spirits in my dreams, I'd suddenly be holding a proton pack of my own, and there was no need for traps after the destruction that I wreaked.
A peaceful sleep, untroubled and serene. No more bogeymen.
Ghostbusters is a fantastic movie.

A group of us even had our own version of Ghostbuster Tees printed back in the 80's that we would wear to the pub.
As 20-somethings on the hunt - we thought they were great conversation starters with the girls - and guess what - they worked!
Who ya gonna call . . .
PS: James - we're all Phoebe Cates fans mate - but just settle down.
Cheers

Ghostbusters - I lived for it. I was a kid when it came out, and there was nothing better than playing the theme song on my stereo and pretending to catch ghosts...
