Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
November 15th 2006 05:01
'Dirty Rotten Scoundrels' sees the dream-teaming of Michael Caine and Steve Martin, in a comedy of dubious ethics and con-artist shenanigans. The set-up goes as thus... two con-artists, one resort. They make a bet to see who can swindle a woman out of 10 grand first, with resulting lunacy.
The film is in equal proportions elaborate, funny and despicable. Steve Martin is perfectly cast as the petty con-artist with a near-complete absence of morals. Michael Caine is also perfect for his role as the high-class con-artist... a man who has become one with the class he swindles, but retains his wits about him nonetheless. I have to say that the plot got a little annoying after a while, tightening the situation further and further until I just couldn't bear it to continue any longer - but I guess that's the aim of the game, so I can't fault it too much for that. I kind of saw the ending coming, it was obvious from the beginning, and did a neat job of absolving the situation completely.
If you haven't seen it, check it out, it's worth it for some great character comedy, and the chemistry between Caine and Martin is perfect. You don't really get films like this any more, it's very 80s - which suits the plot and characters just fine. Have a laugh.
TRIVIA: This is a remake of the 1964 film 'Bedtime Story', which starred David Niven and Marlon Brando.
