A Bronx Tale

You'll probably find 'A Bronx Tale' tucked away in the weekly section of your local video store - a fairly nondescript cover with only one 'big name' actor attached to it. Don't let this fool you - this is a quality film.
It was nothing like I thought it would be; the characters surprised me and the story took turns in directions I didn't expect. In short, it was entertaining. It's adapted from a play by Chazz Palminetri (who also plays local gangster Sonny), and at times you can hear the dialogue as if it were being spoken on a stage. But it works here because the film plays small; it isn't a big scale mafia movie like 'The Godfather', or even 'Goodfellas', it's just a coming-of-age story played against a working class/mafia background.
De Niro also directed this film, and aside from one or two little winks at the audience, it has a fairly intimate style to it. He doesn't try to be too flashy and, even as an actor, he lets the story shine above all else. My only beef with the movie as a whole is that the music is too loud at times, almost drowning out the dialogue.
HIGHLIGHTS: Joe Pesci has a nice little part towards the end.

Some really good acting and solid helming from De Niro himslf as he tries to make his own Scorsese film.
Personally i dig the thumping score but I agree, it sometimes muffles teh dialogue.
