And the 2010 Nominees Are...

February 2nd 2010 13:56

Well, the nominees are in...

BEST PICTURE
Avatar, The Blind Side, District 9, An Education, The Hurt Locker, Inglourious Basterds, Precious, A Serious Man, Up, Up in the Air.

No real surprises there, except for maybe District 9. I think it's a pretty accurate list (with the possible exception of The Blind Side - a decent movie, but not a Best Picture nominee).

BEST ACTOR
Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart), George Clooney (Up in the Air), Colin Firth (A Single Man), Morgan Freeman (Invictus), Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker)

The only big surprise here is Jeremy Renner. I'm not surprised to see Clooney in there, though I'm sure there were lots of better performances that could've been nominated instead. I'm betting on Morgan Freeman for the moment, though Jeff Bridges is way overdue for some glory.

BEST ACTRESS
Sandra Bullock (The Blind Side), Helen Mirren (The Last Station), Carey Mulligan (An Education), Gabourey Sidibe (Precious), Meryl Streep (Julie & Julia)

I will spew if Bullock gets it, and it's highly likely she will. I'll be cheering for Carey Mulligan, and I'll settle for Streep if Mulligan doesn't get it.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Matt Damon (Invictus), Woody Harrelson (The Messenger), Christopher Plummer (The Last Station), Stanley Tucci (The Lovely Bones), Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds)

Christoph Waltz has to get it. Tucci doesn't belong in there, and Damon is totally just nominated for his South African accent.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Penelope Cruz (Nine), Vera Farmiga (Up in the Air), Maggie Gyllenhaal (Crazy Heart), Anna Kendrick (Up in the Air), Mo'Nique (Precious)

Mo'Nique deserves it, she doesn't have much competition either so it should be a dead certainty.

BEST DIRECTOR
James Cameron (Avatar), Quentin Tarantino (Inglourious Basterds), Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker), Lee Daniels (Precious), Jason Reitman (Up in the Air)

This is a hard one to pick... Tarantino might finally get some recognition, but I'm backing Bigelow all the way. She deserves it, and here's hoping she makes Oscar history by being the first female director to get an Academy Award.

Hi Luke,

Some good predictions and interesting comments.

I hope Sandra Bullock does win because she is a great dramatic and comedic actress. Her nearest competition is Carey Mulligan, and I think Meryl won't win. The role in Julie/Julia was fun but not serious enough for a dramatic award such as Best Actress. I also think it was not a very good film choice for Streep to be nominated as Best Actress. Her role in It's Complicated was by far a better performance.

Jeff Bridges is a sure bet but maybe Jeremy Renner beats him to the Best Actor Oscar.

I would love to see Kathryn Bigelow win Best Director and Avatar as Best Picture.

Yeah Renner is a dark horse in the Best Actor category. Bridges deserves some glory though... he's been underrated for far too long.

As for Bullock... Blind Side is the best she's ever been, but it's still not really good enough for me. I think part of the reason she is scooping up all the awards for this film is because a lot of the Academy identify with it - a rich, preppie character who reaches out and helps a poor, disadvantaged black kid reach his full potential. Think about it, Hollywood has a long tradition of trying to make themselves feel better for being rich, and I think Bullock's role will be like a patron saint for them. It's sad but true.
