Old Movies - January 2009

Classic B-movie titles

Classic Batman movie title screen
Here's a gallery of classic title cards from old B-movies like "Batman" and "The Abominable Snowman". It might seem like a dull gallery of images to look through, but some of the titles really stand out.

The title for "Alphaville" is so dull that you'd never imagine watching it, but then you'd be missing out on one of Godard's really tremendous works, a sci-fi movie that looks so terribly camp, but is actually frightening in its execution.

Found on BoingBoing, where one commentor notes:

"A lot of these films are actually extremely well-made, well-acted, and highly entertaining, so don't assume that they're all crap, or you'll be denying yourself many hours of highly enjoyable movie entertainment. Of course, many of them are indeed awful, and awfulness hath its charms too."

I'm one of the rare fans of David Lynch's "Dune", a movie that failed to capture the magic of the book, compressed by studios into a 2 hour mess, but did have its moments of atmospheric joy.

If nothing else, the gallery is a fantastic list of movies that an ol' sucker like me would eat up. I'm all about "Day of the Triffids" or "Barberella", movies that help me remember that cinema can be about sheer lunacy, that we don't need to take ourselves seriously all the time.

Hell, they've even got the title for "This is Spinal Tap", a greatly loved mocku-rocku-mentary. Who can't appreciate the ridiculous nature of this scene:
